**Video diary for the start of autumn:** 15 minutes of speaking, once, on camera, about what the season opens in you. Then the session is closed. A list for autumn is a different piece of furniture.

## Kurz gesagt

- **15 minutes, then stop.** Pennebaker had students write for 15 minutes on each of four days.
- **Speaking counts like writing** when you stay with one concrete piece.
- **Rumination has no end.** A take does.
- **Autumn is the occasion, not the assignment.** You do not owe the calendar a new self.

## One session, not a system

The start of autumn invites lists. A new hour, a new blanket, a new self by November. That becomes a to-do, and a to-do wants a tick. A [video diary](/wissen/video-tagebuch-selbstreflexion) wants a take that finishes.

Set a timer for 15 minutes. Speak about one thing the season opens in you: light, a person, a job that feels different. When the timer rings, stop. Even mid-sentence. The end is the point.

## What Pennebaker actually ran

James Pennebaker and Sandra Beall, in 1986, had students write for 15 minutes on each of four days in a row about a distressing experience, against a group that wrote about trivial topics. The writing group went to the doctor less often in the months after. That is a finding about a short, closed session. It is not a subscription to daily pages.

[Expressive writing](/wissen/journaling-expressives-schreiben) and a camera are relatives: you stay with one concrete piece, you do not pretty it up, you stop. If you turn it into a streak until New Year, you have left the experiment and started a project.

| Basket | What sits in it |
| --- | --- |
| Fact | Pennebaker and Beall, 1986: 15 minutes on four days, about something distressing, not about the day's plan. |
| Hypothesis | One closed take in autumn does what the writing session did: it has an end. Rumination does not. |
| Folklore | "A page every day, and autumn heals." A daily duty is a list. The study was a short series with the door shut. |

## How you notice rumination

Rumination asks the same question and does not answer it. It comes back, often at night, often with the same sentence. Reflection puts the sentence down and leaves. You notice the difference at the timer: if you switch it off and keep talking because the sentence is not "right" yet, you are in the loop.

The take may be bad. It only has to be finished. [Start](/try) is enough for the first 15 minutes. Keeping it is a second step, not the entrance.

## Häufige Fragen

### Do I have to record four days in a row?

No. The study did. Your start of autumn is one session. If you want a second, that is a new decision, not a series.

### Does this replace therapy?

No. A short take sorts what you say. It does not treat an illness.
